Thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPEE), also known as Thermoplastic Polyester Elastomer, also known as polyester rubber or TPC-ET, is a linear block copolymer composed of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) hard segments and polyether/polyester soft segments. This material was first developed by DuPont of the United States and Toyobo of Japan in 1972. It has rubber elasticity and plastic processing properties. The hardness range is Shore D32-82. It can withstand temperatures ranging from -70°C to 200°C. It has properties such as resistance to bending fatigue, impact resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance.
TPEE changes its performance by adjusting the ratio of soft and hard segments. Its compression modulus is higher than that of polyurethane materials. It is widely used in automotive parts (more than 70%), electronic appliances, industrial products and other fields. It is mainly used to manufacture hydraulic hoses, transmission belts, gears and other flex-resistant parts [2] [4]. China's TPEE market size will reach 3.093 billion yuan in 2025, and the global market size will reach 10.808 billion yuan, and is expected to increase to 15.438 billion yuan in 2032 [5]. Ningbo Institute of Materials has developed a bio-based thiophene dicarboxylic acid-based TPEE, which uses poly-2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate-1,3-propylene glycol ester as the hard segment and combined with the polytetrahydrofuran ether soft segment. The elongation at break reaches 760%, the tensile modulus is 122MPa, and it has both biocompatibility and antibacterial properties.
The characteristics of TPEE are:
1. Excellent bending fatigue resistance
2. Instant high temperature performance
3. Excellent impact resistance, especially at low temperatures (-40℃)
4. Good tear resistance and abrasion resistance
5. Excellent chemical and weather resistance
6. Excellent electrical properties
7. Excellent charge carrying capacity
8. Adhesive to materials such as ABS, PBT and PC
9. Adhesive to paint, glue and metal
10. Diversity and ease of processing, good melt fluidity, stable melt state, low shrinkage and fast crystallization speed.
Due to its outstanding mechanical strength, excellent resilience and wide operating temperature and other comprehensive properties, TPEE has been widely used in automotive parts, hydraulic hoses, cables and wires, electronic appliances, industrial products, cultural and sports supplies, biological materials and other fields. Among them, it is the most widely used in the automotive industry, accounting for more than 70%.
