Thermoplastic Vulcanizate (English Thermoplastic Vulcanizate), polyolefin alloy thermoplastic elastomer, referred to as TPV, the Chinese abbreviation of thermoplastic vulcanized rubber is thermoplastic rubber (English Thermoplastic Rubber), abbreviated as TPR, but this name is easily confused with other types of thermoplastic elastomers (English Thermoplastic Elastomer) are often confused together, because thermoplastic elastomers are usually also called thermoplastic rubber, especially styrenic elastomers. At least in China, it seems that "TPR" has become its proprietary name. When it comes to TPR, it refers to thermoplastic elastomers based on styrenic elastomers such as SBS and SEBS. This is inseparable from the large consumption of styrenic elastomers in the field of civilian and terminal consumer goods.

If the name of thermoplastic vulcanized rubber is more detailed, it should be thermoplastic dynamic vulcanized rubber (English: Thermoplastic Dynamic Vulcanizate), adding the word "dynamic" is a more specific description of the process for producing this kind of thermoplastic vulcanized rubber - dynamic vulcanization. This process refers to vulcanizing the rubber during the melting and blending process of rubber and thermoplastic plastics. Of course, the rubber is constantly mixed with the thermoplastic during vulcanization, so the vulcanized rubber is distributed as a dispersed phase in the thermoplastic continuous phase. In short, TPV can be obtained by dynamic vulcanization of TPO. The corresponding thermoplastic static vulcanized rubber means that the rubber is first vulcanized according to traditional methods, and then the vulcanized rubber is ground into powder through grinding equipment, and finally blended with molten thermoplastic plastic. In theory, this method can also produce TPV with excellent performance, but so far, it is only in the laboratory stage.

TPV composition

TPV can be formed between many plastics and rubber, but only a few blends have practical value after dynamic vulcanization. Commercial ones include PP/PE/EPDM, PP/NBR, PP/ACM, and PS/SEBS. In the book "Thermoplastic Elastomers" published by the Chemical Industry Press, 99 types of rubber/plastic blends prepared from 11 types of rubber and 9 types of plastics were reviewed. The study found that in order to obtain the best performance of rubber/thermoplastic dynamic vulcanization blends, the following conditions must be met:

(1) The surface energies of plastic and rubber polymers match;

(2) The length of rubber entangled molecular chains is low;

(3) The crystallinity of plastic is greater than 15%. When the polarity or surface energy difference between plastic and rubber is relatively large, blends with excellent performance can also be obtained by adding appropriate compatibilizers and then performing dynamic vulcanization.
